Ginger Science: meet MC1R

One gene, two pigment families and zero evidence for the missing-soul theory.

According to MedlinePlus Genetics, MC1R provides instructions for a receptor involved in normal pigmentation. When active, it helps melanocytes produce eumelanin; when blocked or inactive, those cells make pheomelanin.

MedlinePlus Genetics also explains that certain variants are associated with red hair, fair skin and freckles, while other genes influence colouring.

MC1R is part of the explanation, not a personality test. Hair colour cannot reveal a person’s complete genotype, ancestry or temperament.

The missing-soul theory remains in the comedy department, where it has a tiny desk and no research budget.
