One red-haired child helped open a much bigger genetics study
An Indian research story that makes the standard redhead map look far too small.

Nature India reported on July 2, 2026 that researchers investigated a rare MC1R variant after meeting a red-haired five-year-old in southern India. The wider project screened 11,021 people from 91 communities and reported 21 previously undescribed pigmentation-gene variants.
The child is not a curiosity prop, and OMGinger is not reproducing her image. The lasting story is the scale of the work that followed: researchers looking beyond heavily studied European populations and finding genetic variation that a narrower map missed.
Pigmentation is shaped by multiple genes and populations carry their own histories of variation. One striking hair colour can begin a question; careful sampling and analysis are what turn that question into research.
