Michelle Marshall photographed a broader picture of red hair

The MC1R portrait project challenged one of ginger culture’s narrowest assumptions.

Black Beauty & Hair featured photographer Michelle Marshall’s portraits of Black and mixed-race people with red hair. Coverage of her MC1R project describes a body of work made to show red hair among people of African and Afro-Caribbean descent.

The significance is visual as much as factual. Popular redhead imagery has often defaulted to a white, Celtic stereotype until repetition starts masquerading as biology. Marshall’s portraits put real people where the cultural picture had left an absence.

OMGinger’s editorial definition is deliberately broad: natural red hair, dye, wigs and memorable red-haired eras across every ethnicity. Marshall’s project addresses natural redheads specifically; that context should stay attached rather than being blurred into a generic trend piece.
